St. Patrick’s Day Safety Tips

Planning on celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with a green shirt and a green beer (or two)? If so, keep these safety tips in mind while you’re having fun with family and friends:

  • Don’t drink and drive—The number of drunk driving accidents increases on St. Patrick’s Day. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 60 people lost their lives in alcohol-related crashes over the holiday weekend in 2016. Don’t risk your life, the lives of your passengers, or the lives of other motorists. Use a designated driver, ridesharing app, or taxi instead.
  • Report drunk drivers to police—If you see a vehicle moving erratically while you’re out on St. Patrick’s Day, do your part in keeping Oklahoma City’s roads safe by reporting the incident to police. Include the make and model of the vehicle, as well as other identifying features. Drunk drivers pose significant risks to themselves and everyone else, and getting them off the street can prevent serious accidents.
  • Stay alert and cautious while walking—Heading out to some of the city’s downtown pubs, restaurants, and bars? If you change venues on foot during the evening, remember that you face increased risks as a pedestrian. Stay safe by walking only on sidewalks and crosswalks, and avoid distractions while walking near traffic.
